PLANCHETTE Scarf

£220.00
sold out

DESCRIPTION

The warp threads of this piece are a beautiful featherweight organic British Romney wool in a soft natural pale grey, and is undyed. The weft is Falklands Merino wool in an ethereal very pale lavender, which I dyed naturally myself. This very subtle combination of colours gives the scarf an almost glowy, diaphanous feel; despite its generous size, this scarf is still very light to wear. The name, Planchette, is inspired by the heart-shaped pointers traditionally used on spirit boards during seances.

It is finished at each end with hand-twisted fringe and knotted tassels.

SIZING

Size (excluding tassels) 175cm/69" long, 41cm/16" wide.

Size (including tassels) 205cm/81" long, 41cm/16" cmwide.

Weight; 277g/9.8oz

COMPOSITION & CARE

Organic Romney wool and Falklands Merino wool.

Hand-wash in cold water with wool detergent. To dry, lay flat on a large towel and roll up like a Swiss roll, squeezing gently. Alternatively, gently machine wash on a cold wool cycle with a small amount of wool detergent. Natural dry on a clothes airer or washing line. DO NOT TUMBLE DRY.

YARN STORY

The pale grey Romney wool is from a small organic farm about 35 miles from where I live, just outside the historic market town of Appleby in Cumbria.

The Falklands Merino wool is hand-dyed by me. In early March 2024 I sowed some woad seeds in my greenhouse, before planting them out on my organic allotment later in the spring. The woad seeds were gifted to me by Jenny Goodwin, daughter of Jill Goodwin. Jill Goodwin wrote the very well known book “A Dyers’ Manual” originally published in 1982; my woad was grown from the descendants of the plants from Jill Goodwin’s dye garden. On the October full moon, I harvested the leaves and used them to create this exquisite very pale greyish-lavender colour. In some places on the scarf, you can even spot some very fine streaks of purple and blue.
